Contraction

Contraction may have one of the following meanings, depending the context of the term:

1. Finance, the distribution of assets to corporate shareholders in a partial liquidation. Contrast with a corporate separation in a divisive reorganization.

2. Economics, a reduction in the level of gross domestic product; a downturn in the business cycle, also called a recession.
